We are pleased to announce support for OpenTracing in Erlang and Elixir by the open source release of a library ‘otter’ (OpenTracing Toolkit for ERlang). This work has been in progress for the past few months and we are thrilled to announce this as part of the “CloudNativeCon + KubeCon Europe” event in Berlin today.
As Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) becomes more and more prevalent in telecoms networks, it is imperative that all software components which are part of a distributed computing environment support OpenTracing. Erlang/OTP is a language/platform which is used extensively in massively concurrent systems and we encourage everyone using Erlang/OTP and Elixir to adopt this library and help us improve it.
The development of ‘otter’ was championed by Holger Winkelmann of Travelping as he wanted to ensure that Erlang/OTP remained a viable choice of language for developing systems in a Cloud Native environment. Holger approached Chandru Mullaparthi of Bluehouse Technology to do the development as Bluehouse have extensive expertise in Telecoms and Erlang. Chandru brought bet365 on board as an additional sponsor for the initial development.
